TitleRobert Stanbury - Miniature Stage Lighting
DescriptionMiniature stage lighting equipment designed and made by Robert Stanbury. The miniature stage lighting is generally for use with 1:24 theatre design models although the equipment is larger for practical reasons. Robert Stanbury taught stage lighting to theatre design students at the Wimbledon College of Art in the late 1950s until the mid-1960s. He also made equipment for people including the eminent lighting designers Michael Northen and Richard Pilbrow and companies such as the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company.

The first accession includes equipment which was ordered by Rae Hammond who was General Manager of the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham. The equipment includes a control desk and several luminaires and everything is unique and handmade. The parts have been labelled to help match them to the control desk e.g. FOH. The control desk pins are moved left/right and the lighting is controlled with the large left and right turning knobs. This collection also includes correspondence between Rae Hammond and Robert Stanbury in which Rae Hammond discusses the particulars of what he wanted in the miniature stage lighting. The control desks were usually designed to a particular specification (layout, number of circuits etc.), whereas the luminaires were hand-built to a standard design.

An additional accession was donated by Robert Stansbury's daughter and includes similar minature lighting equipment in addition to professional files.
ArrangementThe first accession is catalogued. The second accession is uncatalogued and therefore in the form of the original accession.
